Message From the President

Wow! What an exciting time to be involved in the field of health information technology. I think it will be very interesting to look back on this time in a decade or so to see if there was truly an inflection point in leveraging technology to improve patient care. I’m confident that we will have many providers achieve meaningful use, that there will be more information exchanged across the continuum of care, and that consumers will have the ability to make more informed choices. If you are reading this newsletter, then congratulations for enabling those positive changes in our healthcare system.

I encourage you take advantage of our upcoming networking and educational opportunities. Bluegrass HIMSS is your professional organization. I welcome your thoughts on how we can better serve your needs.

Warmest regards,

Jeff Rose President

Federally funded online program trains people to direct Electronic Health Record

New federal law requires that all medical records be converted to electronic files by 2015.

As a result, the need is growing for trained individuals to create electronic health records and to organize workflow in hospitals and physicians’ office to handle the shift from handwritten and paper records to electronic records. Jefferson Community & Technical College’s intensive, non-degree Health Information Technology program is designed to provide a pool of qualified individuals who have both healthcare and information technology knowledge. Individuals who complete on-line program in six months or less will have their tuition paid by a federal grant.

People with healthcare or computer backgrounds may qualify for the program, which offers three specialty tracts that prepare graduates to create the record, practice workflow management and to train others.

Students may begin the program at any time, at their convenience. Students pay a $50 registration fee; the $490 tuition is waived for students who finish the six-month program on time.

Job placement assistance is provided to graduates. For information on the electronic health record training program, visit www.Jefferson.KCTCS.edu/Workforce_Solutions or contact: Angela Cox, 502-213-2605 or angela.cox@kctcs.edu

Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE) Update

The Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE) is making progress! At this time three pilot organizations are ‘LIVE’ (Pikeville Medical Center, Baptist Healthcare, University of KY), pulling patient information from the exchange to format a continuity of care document that physicians can access in their electronic medical record systems in ER/ICU. The University of Louisville and Murray-Calloway Hospital are contributing data to the exchange in TEST, and in the process of data validation testing. A number of other organizations are in the process of connecting and the projection is that KHIE will have 30+ organizations (hospitals and physician practices) connected to the exchange by the end of January, 2011.

Staff from the Governor’s Office of Electronic Health Information (GOEHI) have been providing information about KHIE by speaking at different engagements, including KHA district meetings as well as CME programs provided by the KY Regional Extension Center. If your organization is interested in hearing more about KHIE, the GOEHI staff are available to visit your facility and speak with Leadership Staff, Medical Staff and/or any groups as needed.

If your organization is interested in an overview/more information on KHIE please contact Polly Mullins Bentley, Deputy Executive Director of GOEHI at (502) 564-7992 or Polly.Mullins-Bentley@ky.gov for more details!!
