Bluegrass Healthcare Bytes - Notes from the Kentucky Chapter December 2009

Message From the President

Season’s Greetings! Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah!

I wish each of you a Joyous Holiday Season and a New Year! We all have many blessings to be remindful of during the holidays. May this be a season of precious time that become memories with family and friends. On behalf of the Bluegrass HIMSS Board Members, we look forward to continuing our mission with you in 2010.

Scott Smiser
President
Bluegrass HIMSS Chapter

In Memory of Rich Johnson
August 15, 1959 – October 20, 2009

It is with great sadness that we report that one of the founding members of the Bluegrass HIMSS Chapter passed away on Oct. 20, 2009. Rich Johnson was formerly the CIO of Norton Healthcare in Louisville and served as the first President of the Bluegrass Chapter. He was a strong leader with great vision and created a strong foundation for the Kentucky group that has grown from 30 members to over 300 in 10 years.

Rich worked as chief information officer for Clarian Health for the past five years, making huge strides in the implementation of new technologies, with a focus on improved patient care.

The eldest of five children, Rich was raised in Midland, Michigan. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL, where he met his wife, Cheryl, to whom he was married for 27 years. They traveled the country and the world with their two children, Christin (21) and Jake (15).

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the IU Simon Cancer Center. Online condolences may be made at www.flanner-buchanan.com.

Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers this Holiday Season.

Kentucky Health Information Exchange Update

Kathy Frye, CIO for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, updated the KeHN board on December 2nd, 2009 in Frankfort on the status of the $4.9 Million Medicaid Transformation Grant that was awarded to the state in 2007 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to builder a small simple health information Web portal.

ACS was recently awarded the contract to begin to prepare the technical groundwork for a more complex system to exchange health data between the Kentucky Department of Medicaid Services, health care facilities, provider-run electronic health records (EHRs) and the state’s three existing regional health information organizations (RHIO's). The state is actively working with six undisclosed hospitals for the pilot project that should be in place by April 2010.

After the pilot project has been implemented the state will start to bring on other providers in the state. At this time there is no additional funding for phase II but the state is waiting to hear about the ARRA HITECH funding that they applied for through the State Cooperative Agreement.

In its early stages, the Kentucky HIE will provide physicians with a more complete picture of the medical histories of the state’s 700,000-plus Medicaid patients by enabling instant access to laboratory results, diagnostic images, past diagnoses, hospital discharge summaries and immunization records. Providers will also be offered an EMR Light product if they do not have an EMR currently.

Bluegrass HIMSS Dinner at Woodford Reserve
Are you managing your projects or are your projects managing you?
Bluegrass HIMSS held a sold out event on October 15, 2009 at the Woodford Reserve Distillery. Nancy Piatt presented a program focused on Project Management and how you can regain control of your projects by using some simple tools, processes, and some good old-fashioned planning.
